JetBlue, Yahoo and RIM Plan FREE In-Flight WiFi

December 7th, 2007 by iDunzo

It seems that JetBlue, Yahoo and Research in Motion plan to offer free, in-flight, WiFi web connections for laptop computers and advanced cell phones. RIM made the announcement yesterday.

JetBlue, Yahoo and RIM

The service will apparently allow passengers to access customized Yahoo mail and Yahoo instant messenger services on their laptops or to access corporate e-mails on WiFi enabled BlackBerrys.

According to a spokesperson for RIM the first JetBlue flight offering the service will be on December 11, on Flight 641 from New York to San Francisco.

I hope this proves to be an indicator that RIM is going to start putting WiFi in more and more BlackBerrys – right now the only modern generation Berrys to have it are the BlackBerry 8820, 8320 and 8120.

I think WiFi has now become a smartphone must-have… it should be included on every BlackBerry released from now on.

Too bad I never fly JetBlue. Airlines….are you reading this?

Folding Cup: Flawed Cootie Avoiding Concept

December 6th, 2007 by iDunzo

The premise of the Folding Cup is that, at a party, you are forever in danger of grabbing somebody else’s paper cup.

Designer Jaehyung Hong solves this problem with tiny fold up tabs around the base, each carrying a number, letter or symbol from a deck of cards:

Folding Cup

So. The procedure: First, choose a code and twist the tabs to mark your drink.

Second. Try to remember it.

Third, try to both read and remember the code after several cocktails.

See the problem? The concept will probably never surface, but don’t despair.

The time honored method still works: write your name on the cup with a sharpie. And use big letters.

Details On Upcoming BlackBerry 9000 Series

December 2nd, 2007 by iDunzo

You can always count on BoyGenius for some juicy details on upcoming devices.

He has once again struck gold with some details on a new 9000 series from RIM that will sport an iPhone-like touchscreen.

Here are some of the technical specifications:

  • 480 x 320 screen
  • 1GB of built in memory (the 64mb was getting old)
  • Intel XScale PXA270 processor at 624MHz
  • 3G multiband HSPDA support
  • 2 megapixel or maybe even a 3.2 megapixel camera
  • GPS & WIFI in the Same device

Personally I hate the idea of a touchscreen and would mourn the loss of my trusty keyboard. I really dislike the two handed requirements of a touchscreen.

I do like the idea of 1GB of built in memory and High Speed Packet Data Access. I’m looking forward to at least giving it a test drive before I totally say no to the new BlackBerry.

Microsoft Rumored To Release A Windows Mobile Update

November 29th, 2007 by iDunzo

Windows MobileAlthough there aren’t many details currently available, word on the street is that Microsoft has previewed an update to its smartphone operating system, Windows Mobile 6, to the lucky few attending the annual Mobius conference.

The first report I read came from Engadget this morning, stating that it’s an “update, not an upgrade” running on existing hardware.

Manufacturers will be able to get their hands on the new software in the first quarter of next year.

Here are some of Engadget’s preliminary impressions:

Very slick, and has a lot of features that just about any WinMo user will agree is way overdue. In other words, we’re expecting users will be stoked—no doubt about it.

The updated is not Windows Mobile 7, dubbed by Microsoft as “Photon,” which is also expected to be released next year and said to be powered by Windows Embedded CE 6.0.

Sorry folks, that’s all I know for now.

Details will surface in the near future, likely at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) taking place in Las Vegas in January.

Exploded Apple iPod, Encased in Resin

November 28th, 2007 by iDunzo

This Apple iPod has been split and separated like an exploded diagram, and encased in resin. The amazing thing is that it still works.

Exploded iPod

Poured in layers, just like jelly, the iPod sits in a bubbly cube, with control via the included dock internals and the project, by Billy Chasen, is made geek-perfect by the inclusion of Lego feet.

Hopefully Billy will go to work on a more recursive meta-project next: An Apple G4 Cube, encased in a cube.

$800 Mini-Guitar Fits In Suitcase

November 27th, 2007 by iDunzo

Want a tiny, bad, $800 guitar? Hammacher Schlemmer delivers.

Named The World’s Smallest Percision Electric Guitar, the thing is 1/6 the size of a standard example and is just over two feet long. It has a full complement of 20 frets.

For a laugh, read the marketing blatherskite:

Its injection-molded high-impact polymer composite body is filled with billions of tiny air bubbles that reproduce the cellular structure of wood, giving the guitar the same resonant properties of hardwoods used in standard-sized guitars without the expansion and contraction associated with wood.

I think he’s saying it’s made of plastic.
